Why West Point?

Everyone deserves access to a great quality of life.  Historic West Point has one of the best, with its rich German heritage and numerous gardens and parks, well kept streets and recreational facilities.  The community, which is consistently listed as a great place to live, boasts nearly 100 acres of parkland, thriving retail businesses in and around the community, a dozen community organizations, two churches (St. Mary’s Catholic and West Point Presbyterian), and Holy Trinity Catholic Elementary School.  Additionally, it is served by the Fort Madison Public Community School District (grades K-12).

West Point, which was settled in 1834, is platted around an attractive town square which includes City Hall, the Post Office, and a state-of-the art Library/Museum/Tourist Information Center.  Both Churches and the School are located within one block of the town square.  Additionally located on or within walking distance from City Square Park are numerous shops and other businesses: Dental and chiropractic clinic, veterinary clinic, law office, certified public accountant, banking and insurance services, health and home care, computer services, beauty/barber salons, gas and auto service stations, newspaper/advertising offices, grocery store, florist and gifts, pizza parlor, restaurants, taverns and tax preparation office.

West Point is ideally located in Lee County, Iowa, which is home to Shimek Forest, the largest contiguous forest in the State of Iowa.  Fishing, hunting and camping are an integral part of the areas business and attractions as nearly 75% of Lee County is bordered by rivers (the Mississippi River to the east, the Skunk River to the north, and the Des Moines River to the southwest).  Travelers to Lee County spend approximately $42 million per year and generate over $3 million in state and local taxes, strengthening the economy by creating jobs.  Many of these travelers visit West Point to see:

  •  The site of the first brick church built in the State of Iowa (West Point Presbyterian Church)
  • An ornate Civil War church with French statuary (St. Mary’s Catholic Church)
  • The gravesite of Mark Twain’s Great Grandmother (including two of her children)
  • The Iowa Territory County Seat (March 20, 1843)
  • Festivals (the Sweet Corn Festival in August and the Fall Festival in October)
  • Celebrations (July Fourth Celebration & December Christmas Hometown Holiday)
  • Annual community events (Bar Stool Open in March and the City-Wide Garage Sale in June)
  •  Special Events (Mother’s Day Breakfast in May, Father’s Day Breakfast in June, and a Pancake breakfast in August)

Dining, dancing, bicycling, jogging, walking, tennis, baseball, softball, basketball, bowling, horseshoes, boating, fishing, camping, swimming, and picnicking, are all favorite pastimes available in or adjacent to historic West Point.  Make your home in “West Point – where the neighborhoods are quite but you will never be bored.”
