WP Development Group

The West Point Development Group was formed in 2006 as part of the Iowa Living Roadways Visioning Program.  Volunteers from the community went through a nine month process of needs-assessment and goal-setting.  Meetings were facilitated by a field coordinator from Trees Forever.  Iowa State University organized a design team comprised of professional landscape architects and student interns to help turn our goals into and ideas into viable projects.  Posters were presented to the community showing how these projects could beautify West Point along with materials and cost estimates.  The West Point Development Group is working toward following through on some of these concepts.

As we work toward bringing these concepts to life, we are also active in promoting West Point as a great place to live, work, and visit.  The third Tuesday of each month, the group presents “Tuesday on the Town” putting a spotlight on a local business, giving them the opportunity to remind residents and visitors what they have to offer.

The West Point Development Group also sponsors a Farmer’s Market in the town square every Friday from June through September.

Recently, “Our Iowa” magazine sponsored a contest with the goal of putting a set of vintage Burma Shave signs in each county in Iowa.  Thanks to Dennis Wilkins’ talent with rhyme, West Point was chosen to receive the honor for Lee County.  Stanley Pomberg was happy to let us erect the signs on his property just west of town on J-40.  The signs should be going up soon!
